We had a twelve day opportunity to completely tear down and rebuild all sound, video, and lighting equipment. We literally erected a tent in the balcony to contain our activities which took place day and night. Most of our equipment just needs some TLC like new connectors, cleaning, minor repairs, and proper labeling. Complete engineering specifications and blue prints were prepared in advance.

This whole notion of “out with the old in with the new” as the only means of staying technologically current has become a tragic reflection on a society that produces a ridiculous waste stream. A little elbow grease and a few parts is usually all it takes to get quality equipment back in working order after years of use. Deciding what is worth repairing and what needs upgrading is best made from experience and common sense. As a team we do not follow “rules of thumb” or take advice from people trying to sell us something new and shinny.

There was far better value than just the money saved – the priceless value of volunteers who have first hand knowledge of the equipment they operate and their vested interest in the church that they call home.
